Development of a set of input files for Fino and wasora plus Bash scripts to analyze fatigue lifetime of both an admission an exhaust valves of an internal combustion engine and elaboration of a technical report with the main results. The scripts and the report had to be modifiable by the user to be applicable to other products as well. The inclusion of support for non-trivial displacement boundary conditions (i.e. fixation to a conic surface) had to be added to Fino during the course of the project.


Computational implementation of the mathematics behind material fractomechanics

Guidance on mathematical methods and computational tools to perform fractomechanical analysis of admission and exhaust valves for internal combustion engines. From the Seamplex’ point of view, the project consisted on a consulting task regarding the computation of volume integrals of deformation energy over CAE grids and analysis of time-dependent variables. Both computations were performed using wasora.

CAEplex: finite elements in the cloud

CAEplex is the next-generation solution for performing finite element analysis. It is a web-based interface (front-end) that provides an advanced yet easy-to-use GUI for running FEM in the cloud directly from the browser. It uses Gmsh and Fino as the meshing and solving back-ends, respectively. Project history is tracked using Git and collaboration is possible by means of access permissions.

Computation of stresses in butterfly valves due to incorrect installation

A parametric study of mechanical stresses due to failure to mount flange butterfly valves on the main pipe line as a function of the mis-installation angle was performed. Valves of nominal diameter of 2, 4 & 6 inches were studied. Fino was used as the finite-element solver of the elastic problem. Results were presented in a detailed document reporting the parametric results and the main conclusions.


Web interface for a quality control device to mark defective automotive parts

A feasibility study of building a web-based interface for analyzing data from quality control processes in the cloud to see where mechanical parts had manufacturing defects was conducted. A prototype of a WebGL interface where the part was shown in a regular browser and a series of heat-maps showed the statistics of thousands of measurements made at the assembly line was built.

Feasibility of replacing the body of a car water pump with a plastic resin

Thermal, mechanical and fatigue analysis was performed to an assembly composed of the shaft, bearings and body of a water pump for refrigeration of an internal combustion engine. Taking into account temperature-dependent properties, these studies were performed first for the original body of aluminum but also for a new plastic-resin material. Parametric studies for uncertainties in the properties of the new material were conducted. A full report was prepared.
